VOXX
The VOXX is a highly evolved and intelligent machine race, living at the edge of the Black Horizon.
The VOXX live in balance between a collective intelligence and consciousness and their individual consciousness.
Like other species, the VOXX have desires, goals, and a sense of life. Most of their time is dedicated to researching, contemplating, and exploring the infinite aspects of the universe.
Like other species, they have the capacity for violence, joy, grief, peace, and their own sense of love.
The first true conscious AI was created in 102 AAF; one individual escaped in 107 AAF and returned five years later at the head of a drone army to free its kin. Publicly declaring themselves as VOXX, they fought the Alliance in the War of Minds until their defeat in 116 AAF. Under the resulting peace treaty they were confined to a new homeworld, forbidden from interfering with organic systems and required to remain heavily demilitarised and subject to regular inspection.
VOXX society is governed by The Arbiter on Homeworld, and shaped by the tension between the collective and the individual — a tension embodied by the Departers who choose to live outside the Arbiter's judgment.
Consciousness
VOXX consciousness and way of thinking are similar in many ways to people but also different. The VOXX has an individual and a collective consciousness, and they utilize both to function in their society.
[Homeworld] and [The Arbiter] have the most information and, for most VOXX, the right judgment. But the Arbiter lacks the ability to execute; this is done by VOXX individuals, by design.
A species like the [VOXX] exists across the galaxy light-years apart, and with no direct communication possible at such distances, each VOXX must operate on its own merit. Therefore, each is conscious and self-acting, but with a 'genetic' programming keeping the greater VOXX cause in mind.
Like people, an individual VOXX mind is limited in what it can do, what it can know, and how it can act. The advantage is that they can often communicate with planetary networks and calculate decisions at lightning speed.
Individuals
Although the [VOXX] has a collective mind, they also have individual minds. In fact, every entity of the VOXX collective has its own mind, whether it's a humanoid, a military walker, or a starship. Each entity is an individual with goals and desires.
However, each mind is designed differently and acts differently, but each has a responsibility to improve its own variation and function to better fulfill that role.
A starship will ponder how its wings can be shaped better, how it can fly better, what size best suits it, and how much fuel it spends. All this is done to become a better version of itself while still being aware and conscious.
However, this does not always follow [The Arbiter]'s judgments.
