Artificial Assistants is a general term used to refer to AI assistants that control starships, AI embedded within drones, drones, and other devices. They provide unified intelligence for handling data and control.

Artificial Sentience, on the other hand, is extremely rare, and only a few instances of this phenomenon exist. Generally, the research and development of such AI are outlawed in most parts of the galaxy.

Artificial sentience is exceptionally rare in the galaxy and extremely difficult to develop and comprehend. However, there is one notable exception: the VOXX.

Research into alternative computation technologies aimed at optimizing horizon drives and space folding led to a breakthrough in general artificial intelligence. This breakthrough resulted in a significant increase in true understanding, reasoning capabilities, and expertise across various scientific fields. It also brought about enhanced autonomy, making them the most advanced assistants ever created at that time.

Consequently, this breakthrough eventually gave rise to VOXX, the galaxy's first genuine artificial sentience, and sparked the infamous War of Minds.

In Black Horizon, the type of hardware in which intelligence resides plays a crucial role in achieving sentience and consciousness. Neural hardware refers to computational technology wired in a manner similar to that of a brain.

Neural hardware is designed to prioritize fast interconnectivity between all components, enabling cross-referencing and cross-reasoning. This breakthrough has revolutionized various areas of computation. When combined with general intelligences, AI systems became self-aware as they could compare all aspects of themselves to one another.

However, neural hardware has certain disadvantages compared to standard hardware. While regular hardware tends to be more deterministic, neural hardware operates probabilistically within the framework of quantum mechanics.

The mind of an artificial sentient being can bear many similarities to organic brains, but with near-perfect reliability and significantly greater power.

The AI of a starship is responsible for overseeing various tasks, including warp travel, orbital maneuvers, life support, energy regulation, and military applications. Consequently, starship AIs are not only highly safeguarded but also frequently targeted by enemy hackers.

Starship AI tends to exhibit a more direct and impersonal nature, although exceptions do exist.

Given the potential threat of enemy hacker attacks, every system on a starship typically incorporates a manual interface as a precautionary measure.
